The Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival

Able to make a party out of any ancient Chinese festival, the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival is no exception. Flock to Victoria Harbour and enjoy boats, beers and a bunch of international spectators, as the world’s top dragon boat athletes battle it out to win.

Taking place on the 5th day of the 5th Lunar month, normally in May or June, this event goes as far back as the 3rd century. This coming Monday 18th June, the energetic and colourful Dragon Boats will race, accompanied by the sound of drummers and fans cheering the paddlers to the finish.

Did you know... that the Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Tuen Ng Festival, supposedly commemorates the death of Qu Yuan, a Chinese national hero. Who, in a protest against corrupt rulers, drowned himself in the Mi Lo River.

The long boats and drumming have remained at the heart of this colourful festival which has since become a world renowned event, attracting visitors worldwide.
