Aberdeen's Typhoon Shelter (1990's)

The typhoon shelter is a place where fishermen live on boats, and it is also a shelter for ships to resist strong winds and heavy waves when typhoons attack. Typhoon shelters are usually arched and recessed bays, and the passages connecting the sea are mostly blocked by man-made breakwaters, and ships only enter and exit through narrow passages.

Before the 1990s, a considerable population of Hong Kong still used water as their home in the typhoon shelter and established a unique water culture. However, with the decline of Hong Kong's fishing industry, most fishermen have gone ashore to live, and the typhoon shelter culture has gradually disappeared.
