Tin Hau Festival - Joss House Bay
The main Tin Hau festival takes place at the oldest Hong Kong Tin Hau Temple (1266 CE) in Joss House Bay on the 23rd day of the 3rd moon of the lunar calendar.
Boats come from far and wide to celebrate the Sea Goddess' birthday carrying lion and dragon dancers and highly decorated fa pau (floral wreaths) on their bows.
This temple was only accessible by sea until a road was built to the Clearwater Bay Golf Club.
Sea Goddess is a fascinating concise story about Tin Hau, the Empress of Heaven, who has protected fishermen and boat people in hong Kong for centuries. Tin Hau sits in over 100 temples dedicated to her in Hong Kong.
